The Cobra Story: Our Milton Keynes Club
We are a dynamic and dedicated group of passionate badminton players from Milton Keynes, united by a shared love for the exhilarating sport of badminton. Our journey struck its first shuttle in January 2025. Since then, we've consistently hit the courts at the National Badminton Centre (NBC) every Wednesday, fostering a friendly and social community built on sportsmanship, continuous skill enhancement, and pure enjoyment. We are an intermediate-level non-profit club focused on enjoyable yet competitive games, officially affiliated with Badminton England (CL008437) and proudly aligned with the 'A Sport that Cares' framework. The club is steered by a member-elected Cobra Council, with our newly elected board members and team captains taking up their roles on 1st June 2026 to keep pushing the club forward.
At our core, Cobra Smash is a fully volunteer-led non-profit. Every pound our members contribute goes straight back into the club: court hire at NBC, shuttles, league fees, equipment, and the social side of what we do. Nobody profits personally from Cobra Smash. Since 30 September 2026, club money has been held in a dedicated charitable club account in the club's name. Our Cobra Council gives their time freely, and every subscription is reinvested into keeping the sport welcoming, affordable, and well-run for everyone who walks through the doors. It's a simple idea, and one we're proud of: a club by members, for members.
We also keep close to the game as it changes. From 3rd June 2026 we played every Cobra Smash club night under the new BWF 3x15 scoring format, well ahead of the international rollout in January 2027, and it gave us faster games and sharper rallies. That trial is paused for now. Club nights are back to traditional 21-point scoring, in line with MKDBA league play, so our Wednesday games and our league matches follow the same rules. We plan to switch back to 3x15 next season.
Our regular sessions are a testament to our collective commitment to the game and to the strong bonds we've forged as a team.
Our Club's Ambitions
We're not just about friendly games; we have exciting plans to grow and elevate Cobra Smash Badminton Club to new heights...
- League Success: In our debut MKDBA (Milton Keynes & District Badminton Association) season 2025-26, we finished top of Division 4 and earned promotion. For the 2026-27 season we field two teams, competing in Division 3 and Division 4. ⚡🏸
- Climbing the Divisions: Our ambition for next season is to take both teams up a level, into Division 2 and Division 3.
- Annual Club Events: Planning internal badminton tournaments and fantastic social events throughout the year.
- Sharpening Our Fangs: Friendly matches with other local badminton groups to keep raising our level.

Frequently Asked Questions
We are primarily a club for intermediate to advanced players. This means you should be comfortable with all basic strokes, have good court movement, and understand doubles tactics. We aim for competitive games, so this standard is important to ensure everyone enjoys the session.
Club nights are played to traditional 21-point scoring, the same format used in MKDBA league matches, so our Wednesday games and our league matches follow the same rules.
We trialled the new BWF 3x15 format from 3rd June 2026, well ahead of its international rollout in January 2027. That trial is paused for now, and we plan to switch back to 3x15 next season.
Unfortunately, no. We have a limited number of court spaces available. All prospective players must first contact us to request a guest session using the "Join Us" section below. For the trial, you'll just join one of our regular sessions as a guest, which is a great way to get a feel for the group and see if it's a good fit. We do have a bit of a waiting list due to limited courts; however, with our guest rotation policy, if you're a good fit, we'll invite you to join as a guest whenever a spot opens up.
Members pay a £40 quarterly club subscription, set by the Cobra Council. It mainly covers the feather shuttlecocks we use at every session, so on the night members pay only their share of the court cost. The Cobra Council reviews the amount at regular intervals.
Guests pay their share of the court cost plus a flat £3 for shuttles. This hybrid approach has been in place since 30 September 2026.
League costs are separate again, and shared only among the players taking part in that league. We play at the National Badminton Centre (Bradwell Road, Milton Keynes MK8 9LA) on Wednesdays, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM.
Please note: NBC charges a separate entrance fee per visit, with an annual pass option available for regular attendees.
Since 30 September 2026 we've used a hybrid approach that keeps session payments simple to manage and fair for everyone.
Members: pay your share of the court cost for the session. Shuttles are already paid for through the £40 quarterly subscription.
Guests: pay your share of the court cost, plus a flat £3 for shuttles.
Leagues: league costs are separate from both, and shared only among the players in that league.
Payments go into the club's own HSBC UK Charitable Bank Account: a dedicated account in the club's name. We don't publish account details on the website. The Cobra Council shares them directly with members and guests.
Members enjoy priority access to all sessions and have the opportunity to represent the club in competitive leagues. This ensures you can play regularly and be part of our competitive teams if you wish.
Members also pay less on the night: the £40 quarterly subscription covers shuttles, so members pay only their share of the court cost, while guests add a flat £3 for shuttles.
League costs are separate from the quarterly subscription and from session payments, and are shared only among the participants in that specific league. The exact costs vary depending on the league and number of participants.
Our membership is currently full, but we regularly review availability based on member attendance and offer openings to people on our waiting list. In the meantime, we maintain the waiting list and invite guests to fill open slots according to our rotation policy.
Please bring your own badminton racket and wear appropriate non-marking court shoes. We provide feather shuttlecocks for all games. Also, don't forget a water bottle! 💧
Currently, Cobra Smash is not a coaching club and is not suitable for complete beginners. Our sessions are focused on social and competitive match play for experienced players. We recommend checking with the National Badminton Centre directly for any beginner coaching programs they may offer.
